1. Perfect your posture. The way you carry yourself makes a clear-cut first impression. But posture is more than just avoiding the slouch. To improve, keep your head up, your shoulders naturally rolled back, and stretch up tall by elongating the rib cage and spine. You even gain height with this method. The Show Off Move: Arching the back, sticking the chest and butt out, as if you’ve just finished an Olympic gymnastics routine. Or for guys, throwing the hips too far forward and jutting the chin out. You’re not really a gangsta, are you?
2. Slow your walk down. Your walk defines your sophistication or style. Don’t just rush into a room. Make every step count. The Show Off Move: Strutting around as if you’re on the runway at Milan’s fashion week—save that walk for the actual job.
3. Select one item for your outfit that really stands out. Someone with their own sense of style doesn’t need to shout with the wardrobe. One cool accent piece worn with an otherwise neutral outfit provides interest and intrigue. For example, a bejeweled rock star belt with a simple jean outfit, or a great pair of kitten heel sandals with a plain black dress allows your inner fashionista to shine. The Show Off Move: Decking yourself out in the most expensive designers just because of the labels—you might as well wear the price tags, too.
4. Keep jewelry strong, but not overpowering. In your everyday wardrobe, stick to pieces that complete your outfit. For guys, a great watch is a perfect complement to any wardrobe. Girls, limit your costume jewelry (a cool pair of vintage earrings, or one really awesome necklace). The Show Off Move: What are you, a gypsy? What’s with all the bangles? You’re going to set off the metal detector at the airport.
5. Wear clothes that fit. You can have the most expensive, beautiful clothes in the world, but if they don’t fit properly, they do you no justice. One of the biggest fashion violations right now is the muffin top, where a little roll of flesh spills out over too tight (and often too low) jeans. Opt for a larger size or a different style, and you’ll get noticed for the right reasons. The Show Off Move: Bearing enough skin to get a
sunburn.
6. Keep your voice down. You’ll definitely get noticed for the right reasons if you speak at the appropriate volume. Work on modulating your laugh as well. The Show Off Move: A voice that could shatter glass.
7. A fabulous, versatile haircut can make all the difference in your look.
Pick a multipurpose haircut. Hair that you can style a bunch of different ways labels you as resourceful and creative. You can change your look up with a variety of accessories or different styling products. The Show Off Move: Hair that is a color only found in yarn.
8.Finish a great makeup job and you will instantly become more noticeable.
Your everyday makeup says a lot about you. A great makeup job is finished by blending, blending, blending! Invest in a good set of makeup brushes and thoroughly blend shadows and liners. Erase any foundation line at the chin. The Show Off Move: Piling on the makeup with a trowel as if you have a gig at the House of Blues that night.
9.Beware of extreme styles that may soon be out of style.
Fashion is great—it’s always good to have the latest looks in the closet, or the hottest makeup and hairstyles. But extreme styles, such as cat-eye liner, facial piercings or shaved hair, for example, draw attention for the wrong reasons. The Show Off Move: Plucking the eyebrows off and then drawing them on again. Your face is not a sketchpad.
10. Work on a natural skin glow. Healthy skin tone overall definitely causes people to take a second look. If you want to add a little color, do it sparingly. A Mystic Tan, done minimally, gives you a temporary glow without the streaks of self-tanning products, and you won’t have the dangers of sun exposure. The Show Off Move: Tanning until you become the shade of a barbeque potato chip.
It’s not that hard to incorporate a few of these tips into your daily routine. After you do, it won’t be long before you’ll start turning heads and hearing people say, “What is it about that person? They’ve got something.” And that presence in your everyday life will carry through into your go-sees and casting calls. So get started and get noticed. AFM
